About
I do research in visual ethnography, migration, and consumption. My background is in the 19th century literature and critical theory, I have a life commitment to European Realism and Modernism. Since 2002 I have been teaching advertising and consumer studies, still through the eyes of Charles Baudelaire and Karl Marx. I produce ethno-documentary films whose reliability I also question. I am particularly intrigued by the role of the researcher who is also a film director on a practice-based research location. I want to see more creativity in teaching, so I play with the camera, blogging and videocasts. I do visual ethnography on the outskirts of London and similar margins in Eastern Europe, namely post-industrial housing estates in Poland. I am involved in the network of researchers interested in Eastern European and (post)communist studies, migration, and ethnicity. Beyond academia I work for the community of Plumstead, South East London on creative projects, we run together: The Short Film Festival, Edge of the City. I supervise PHD students in cultural identities, third sector branding, Eastern European Migration, post-industrial change, creative communities, media representations of ethnicities.
